Artist Statement:
Art has caused an internal battle inside of me. Art tries to tear me away from all structured and static ambitions. In the words of Jerome Witkin, “If artists were certain, he or she wouldn’t make art.” I took art on as a second major to relieve stress and restore me for the rest of my business classes. There was no intention on continuing to make art after college as a career, but a passion has grown the last 3 years that I will not be able to escape. The freedom of art has posed a challenge in the past but has now pushed me to be better than I ever thought I could be. The last semester of my senior year has brought everything I learned over the years and molded me into an artist.
My works completed in my senior year are all in 2-D. I have tried to make pots and vases in ceramics, and worked with 3-D design in Design 2. Painting and drawing just come more natural to me. Printmaking has given me a new avenue to use my drawing skills along with my color combination skills I have obtained through painting.
My paintings are influenced by an assignment of equivocal space, which is to make the foreground and background ambiguous. My favorite part of painting these is trying to play tricks on the eye by using implied lines.
Drawing and doodling is what got me into art. Through drawing classes I have learned how to see what things really look like. Figure drawing makes you come as you are and search for something beyond oneself. Drawing is the most spiritual art I find myself doing; it takes such solitude into one’s own mind.
Printmaking was a thorn in my side the first semester I explored it. The second semester my focus was on screen printing. It seems to be the most modern and medium of my generation. I have been able to make mistakes work and doubt successful. Ideas and concepts for screen printing seem to be flowing out of my body on to paper faster than I can clean up the ink from the last print.
